Wow, I’m about to match the Professor Fury record for non-posting days. April came and went with a whirlwind calendar so full that it’s taken a week plus to recover from all the running around. May looks like it’s going to be a lot slower, thankfully. My parents are coming to stay the weekend for Mother’s Day and to catch the last baseball game in LSU’s Alex Box stadium on Sunday, but amongst all that visiting I’ve got my sights set on the CD release party for Harlan on Saturday night at Chelsea’s. Harlan is one of the best bands out of Baton Rouge these days and seeing how they don’t get together to play very often and there are rumors of a certain key member’s possible move out of state, this is a show to catch for sure.
So, I haven’t been privy to a good live music show here in Baton Rouge in way too long (which is not the fault of Baton Rouge inasmuch that of my own lazy ass). I was perusing Alex Cook’s latest ‘Record Crate’ entry over at 225batonrouge and did some follow up on Saturday night’s Spanish Moon show, which introduced me to the Dirty Projectors, who immediately caught my ear and sound like something that will be quite interesting to hear reproduced live. Alex has indicated that he missed their last stop through town and was told it was ‘the show of the year.’ So that sounds like a show to make for sure, and hopefully I’ll be looking to celebrate an LSU win against the undefeated Gamecocks of South Carolina.
There’s been an oh so subtle shift in the weather down here in the Red Stick, with the morning holding on to a pleasant coolness for a few hours before the heat of the day hits. Wgo is looking to have a fire for the Autumnal Equinox celebration we’re throwing on Sunday and while that might be a bit on the side of wishful thinking, well, here’s wishing…
One of the members of the UG pointed me to GoodReads.com the other day, and I’m hooked. It’s pretty much a Flickr-like site but dedicated to books. First off, it’s a really easy way to keep track of the books you’ve read (something I’ve always wanted to do but failed miserably at) and second, with its ‘friends’ feature you can see what people you know are reading. So if you feel like it, join up and search for ‘{dvc}’ and add me as a friend. I look forward to browsing your bookshelf.
A little less than a year ago a new mom and pop fried chicken joint opened up on Nicholson not too far from where I work. I’d planned on giving it a try at some point, as Baton Rouge isn’t near the fried chicken town that Jackson is (oh Two Sisters, I miss you and your buffet so…). The idea of trying out some fried chicken that was something other than the corporate chain variety was something I was looking forward to.
That is, until I drove by the other day and saw this sign:

Not much to report really. Since Sunday’s Saint’s game in New Orleans, I’ve been prepping and resting up for the last big road trip of the year. E and I, plus Wgo and Wrestlerette are taking a 3 day weekend to go to Lucky’s wedding shin-dig up in Oxford Towne. One of the few big minuses in moving down to Baton Rouge has been my loss of proximity to Oxford. This is my first trip back there since moving Deeper South and I’m beyond excited at the idea of a chilly evening out around the Square, an afternoon in a hushed corner of Square Books, and a visit to Rowan Oak. And that’s before I even contemplate all the hometown and undergraduate friends that will be in attendance. It will be a high-flying weekend, for sure.
I am no fan of pet-centric blogs, websites, etc, and really thought I would have made it further than 2 posts before caving in to even a hint of such myself. But somethings are too good to pass up, especially when there’s a bad pun to go along with it (but are there good puns, or are puns better the worse they are?).
So, what do you get when Buster J thinks you’ve spent too much time on the computer for the day, but you’re still sitting on the couch, computer in your lap, finishing up that overtime work you brought home with you? (more…)
